While attending Florida State University, he became a recipient of several awards, including the Golden Spikes Award, the Dick Howser Trophy, the Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year, Sporting News Player of the Year, as well as the ACC Player of the Year in 1997.

In the same year, he was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies as its second overall pick in the MLB Draft. Eventually, he ended up playing in the independent Northern League for the St. Paul Saints.

After a short stint with the St.Paul Saints, Drew was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals to a $7 million contract. After a while, he was traded to the Atlanta Braves. In 2004, he was signed by Los Angeles to a five-year, $55 million contract. By January 2007, he was again signed by the Boston Red Sox to a five-year, $70 million deal.
