For the most straightforward installation, install your steering wheel adapter and aftermarket stereo at the same time. If you already have an aftermarket stereo installed, you‘ll need to pull it out of your dash to install the steering wheel control adapter.

This subject is a little complicated, but the basic answer is that, no, you can‘t connect steering wheel audio controls to an aftermarket radio without an adapter. In most cases, though, an adapter is required.

SWC Interface Wiring

Each interface (either stand-alone or as part of a multi-function product) has one blue/yellow wire and one black wire with a stereo-type 3.5mm plug. Both wires accomplish the same purpose: transfering the SWC signals to the radio.

SWC is an acronym standing for Steering Wheel Control. An SWC interface is a module that connects a vehicle’s OEM steering wheel controls with an aftermarket headunit or radio replacement unit.

For Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Pioneer, Sony or Valor radios, connect the SWI–RC 1/8″ plug into the radio’s Steering Wheel input jack on back of radio or wire harness. For Kenwood or OEM radios, connect the blue/yel wire to the remote Input wire (blue/yel or yel/blu for Kenwood, gray for OEM) of radio.

This unit has an audio-sense remote output. Meaning when the radio is turned on, it senses an audio signal and sends a 12 volt signal through the remote output wire from the line output converter. Installing the ASWC

1) Connect the Black wire of the ASWC to ground. You may use the same grounding point as the aftermarket radio. 2) Connect the Red wire of the ASWC to a 12-volt accessory wire, one that turns “on” and “off” with the ignition key.
