Ruth Jones Biography

Ruth Jones is a Welsh television actress, novelist, and screenwriter. Also, she co-starred and co-wrote award-winning British comedy Gavin & Stacey and has appeared in many television dramas and comedies. She played a lead role in the comedy-drama series Stella for Sky 1 produced by Tidy Productions, a company they founded in 2008 with her husband David Peet. In 2007, she was named the Best Female Comedy Newcomer by the British Comedy Awards. 

She was raised up in Porthcawl and attended Porthcawl Comprehensive School. She began participating in every year musical theatre productions. She later joined the University of Warwick where she graduated with a degree in Theatre Studies and Dramatic Arts. After graduating she trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff. In 1989, she made her first debut in professional role-playing the Countess Almaviva. During that she toured the UK for six months.

After the tour, she worked as a clerical assistant in the Education Contracts dept of Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council after she found it hard to find an acting job. At that point, she even considered training as a solicitor. In 1990, she was offered an equity contract shifting scenery and playing a ninja turtle (Michaelangelo!)

In 1991, she first worked in TV and radio comedy for BBC Wales. In 1999, she played a role in a hit British film, East Is East and her performance helped her get theatre roles with RSC and National Theatre.

She later appeared on television as Kelly in four series of ITV’s comedy Fat Friends, where she met future Gavin & Stacey co-writer, James Corden. She also made an appearance in several BBC comedies playing as Magz in Saxondale, Linda in Nighty Night and  Myfanwy in Little Britain.

In 2008, she achieved her prominence with the BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey where she took the lead role as Nessa Jenkins and she co-wrote with James Corden. The show became a hit for BBC3 and moved to BBC 1. In 2008, she featured on BBC 1 Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Little Dorrit two television period costume dramas and also featured in two episodes of the Street. 

In December 2009, she starred in A Child’s Christmases In Wales. However,  In 2010, she starred in BBC four comedy The Great Outdoors alongside. In January 2011,  she starred as carrying On actor Hattie Jacques in the BBC Four drama Hattie, which tells the story of Jacques’ affair with her young driver John Schofield while she was married to John Le Mesurier.

She co-founded Tidy Productions with producer David Peet and produced the series that she represented on BBC Radio Wales in 2008-2009. Also, In January 2018 Jones took the part of Mandy Haveez in the Radio Wales comedy series SPLOTT. She worked with director  Debbie Issit appearing in the forthcoming film Nativity 4 in March 2018. Her first novel Never Greener was published in April 2018. The novel went into Sunday Times bestseller list at no 7 after just three days of sales and even at one point, the novel reached number one slot for two consecutive weeks.

David ended up leaving his wife, and Ruth and he have been together ever since. Ruth Jones’ husband has also produced the shows Borderline (1990) and The Great Outdoors (2010). The couple lives in Cardiff.
