He was born Richard Preston Carlisle on October 27, 1959 in Ogdensburg, New York, but was raised in Lisbon, New York. He attended Lisbon High School, then Worcester Academy, in Worcester, Massachusetts. After a year at Worcester, he played basketball for two years at the University of Maine before transferring to the University of Virginia in 1982.

Coaching career

In September 2003, he joined the Indiana Pacers organization as head coach. In his first season, he led the Pacers to the NBA record (61-21), the most wins in franchise history, and to the Central Division championship. In four seasons with the Pacers, Carlisle posted a regular season record of 181-147 (.552) and also led the team to three straight playoff appearances.

After his Pacers career, he worked briefly as a studio analyst for ESPN before being hired by the Dallas Mavericks as head coach in 2008.
